A word on what this does and doesn't do, because the industry oversells it. The
National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health
says massage therapy may help with pain, stress and relaxation.
Mayo Clinic
describes relaxation techniques as a way to lower stress and ease tense muscles, and the
American Massage Therapy Association
points to research associating massage with relief from anxiety and muscle tension. The
older reflexology claim — that points on the sole map to specific organs — isn't supported
by good evidence. We don't make it. The hour still feels excellent and your feet still stop
hurting.
New York State licenses massage therapists through the NYS Education Department's Office of
the Professions, and licensed practitioners use the title LMT. You're welcome to ask about
your therapist's credentials when you book — a good studio never minds the question. If
you're pregnant, on blood thinners, or being treated for something serious, check with your
doctor first and tell us when you arrive.
